Time change! Come play the Big Freeze Ice Bowl course

Baskets aren’t up yet, but we have some flags out there. Join course designers Andy Richardson, Tim Engstrom and possibly Buck Monson at 1 p.m. this Sunday. Park at the gate on the north side of Edgewater Park and walk out to the course. It is in the former country club land.

Border Cup

The Border Cup is a team competition between the Flying Lea Disc Golf Club and the Northwood Disc Golf Club. This year, it takes place at Bancroft Bay Park.

Tim Engstrom is the team captain for Flying Lea. Mark Skellenger is team captain for Northwood. Captains pick the team and who partners with whom for doubles. Membership in the club is mandatory to be on a team. Participation in club events is a factor in getting on the team.

The Flying Lea DGC team will be represented by the following eight players, with partners shown:
Jared Johnson and Andy Richardson
Art Schorn and Eric Harbacheck
Robert Suniga and Lars Tonding
Buck Monson and Ray Besco

Alternates (in order):
Joe Beauseigneur
Dave Sime
Tim Engstrom

Player Meeting at 9:45 a.m.
Tee at 10 a.m.

1st Round (morning)
The 16 players (8 from each club) play as individuals.
After the 1st round is complete, the best 4 of 8 individual scores for each club would be added together in the “Club’s Total Score”

1 hour lunch break

2nd Round (afternoon)
Each club has 4 doubles teams.
After the round is complete, the best 2 of 4 doubles scores for each club would be added together in the “Club’s Total Score”

So each “Club’s Total Score” would consist of 6 scores (4 singles, and 2 doubles)

The lowest Club Total Score would be the champion, get the trophy, and get the $100 (each Club brings $50 to enter). The club can use that money for course improvements.

Jared Johnson dominates at Bancroft Bay Open

Flying Lea Disc Golf Club member Jared Johnson won the windy Bancroft Bay Open on Sunday, May 22, by seven throws. He totaled 13 under par, with Shawn Vierus garnering second with 6 under.

Winds were 14-18 mph in the first round and 20-25 mph in the second, throwing the scores into disarray. Results are posted here.

The Bancroft Bay Open is the fourth stop on the North Iowa Tour.

Dillon Stolt wins high school title

It rained the entire 27 holes of the Albert Lea High School Championship on Saturday, May 14. In the end, Dillon Stolt won by six throws, getting +4 on all 27 at Bancroft Bay Park.

Art Schorn wins Bag Tag Opener

Art Schorn braved the cold and the crisp breeze to walk away with Bag Tag 1 and $40 on Sunday. Results can be found on this page at DiscGolfScene.com. Also, see the standings of the Flying Lea Bag Tag Challange on this page.

Season Pass for $70: You a $100 value for only $70. Season passes give you membership, entry to Sunday League for the entire 20-week season and 5 CTP entries. (So it is $4 x 20 weeks = $80 + $10 membership = $90 + 5 $2 CTPs = $100)

Season Pass for $60: If you already have purchased a membership, then the season pass only costs you $60.

2011 Season

The big news is no handicaps! We will have divisions.
The other big news is we offer season passes. You get $100 value for $70.

Please send feedback and suggestions for changes to Tim Engstrom by sending e-mail to: engstromcampout@gmail.com. Or you can post feedback on the club’s Facebook page.

The decisions were formed at two meetings in January by board members Tim Engstrom, Buck Monson, Andy Richardson and Art Schorn.

Singles League
Time: 1 p.m. Sundays
First day: April 3 (Bag Tag Opener is March 27)
Prices: $4 ($3 to the prize dough and $1 to the club), $2 CTP, $1 Ace Pot
Format: 3 divisions, Advanced, Intermediate and Women (no handicaps this year)
Prizes: Prize dough for Advanced and Intermediate is divided based on players in each division. The top three players in each category win cash. In the Women’s division, only the top player gets the cash (when more women compete, this could change).
Tiebreaker at BBP: Same as before. Play Hole 1, then CTP back to 18’s basket.
Tiebreaker at RCC: Play Hole 10, then CTP back to 18’s basket.
Places: Places push this year when there are ties. Say two people tie for 1st place, the tiebreaker would determine 1st and 2nd place, pushing the 2nd place finisher to 3rd.
Season Pass for $70: You a $100 value for only $70. Season passes give you membership, entry to Sunday League for the entire 20-week season and 5 CTP entries. (So it is $4 x 20 weeks = $80 + $10 membership = $90 + 5 $2 CTPs = $100)
Special rule 1: League will rank top players based on scores. The Top 10 must compete in the Advanced. All other players have a choice. (However, sandbaggers can be given plenty of grief and guilt by other players.)
Special rule 2: If 10 or fewer male players show up for league play, then there is automatically one division for them.
Location: The play will rotate like this — two weeks at the 18-hole course at Riverland Community College and then two weeks at the 18-hole course at Bancroft Bay Park, then two at RCC, then two at BBP and so on. There are few fun exceptions later in the season, like playing at Clarks Grove. Find the location on the schedule at DiscGolfScene.com or on this site here.
Results: Tim Engstrom will post results at DiscGolfScene.com (players are encouraged to join but it is not necessary).
Director: League will be run by Art Schorn and Derreck Walk jointly. However, they might sometimes ask a board member to substitute.

Board election
The 2011 board election will take place at the start of the Bag Tag Opener. Our present board members are Art Schorn, Tim Engstrom, Buck Monson, Andy Richardson, Jeshua Erickson, Luke “Scrappy” Boyer and Derreck Walk. Our club runs things rather informally, which is they way most people like it. Board members are people generally interested in running stuff and in making the decisions that determine the league, tournaments, club goals, club fundraisers, stuff like that. The slate of candidates will be offered up for a member vote at the Bag Tag Opener on March 27. Positions sometimes open up, so if you wish to join the board, just let any current board member know.

Bag tags
Bag tags will be run much like last year, with the No. 1 tag owner not having to pay a $4 fee at Sunday League. We will ask Nancy Vanderwaerdt to sponsor them again. The background this year will be black!
When tags are on the line: Anytime players play each other, whether it is stated at the onset or not and no matter which course it is at. During Sunday League, the tags are on the line among the foursome (or whatever size the group is) you are in. Anyone who refuses to play for a bag tag must give up the tag. (Don’t be so possessive over good tags anyway. It’s all in good fun.)
Cross-challenges: During Sunday League, players can make one cross-challenge. In other words, challenge a player in another group This is much like leagues in other places. The maximum challenges one player can make is one. The maximum challenges one player can receive is two. Challenges within the foursome trump cross-challenges. If the guy you challenged lost the tag in the group, it nixes the cross-challenge.

Points Race
Format: All players simply will accumulate points in Sunday League, Doubles League and club tournaments during first half of season, without any divisions. At the halfway point, divisions of Advanced and Intermediate will be determined based on which division they generally fall into during Sunday League. Tournaments are worth double points. Points can be accumulated starting at the Bag Tag Opener and finishing at the Flying Lea Championship.
Prizes: The Advanced Points Race will have better prizes than the Intermediate Points Race. The prizes are to be determined, but the top prize is already on order — a custom disc golf cart/seat.
Results: Tim Engstrom will post results on DiscGolfScene.com, if possible, or else on the club website using Google Spreadsheets posted on this site.

Club goal
The Flying Lea Disc Golf Club will seek to raise funds for tee pads at Riverland Community Disc Golf Course. The club will seek to get hole sponsors for the signs (SHIP grant money already funds the signs) to offset most of the cost of the concrete.

Riverland changes
There were discussions both nights about Holes 17 and 18 at Riverland being too close to the ballfields. However, it was concluded to leave them be for this summer and see if a problem arises. Perhaps, the problem is just an imagined fear.

Fundraisers and other purchases
• The club will purchase custom discs with the club name and logo for sale to players. Buck will design the disc with a silhouette of club champs (Art and Deric).
• The club down the road will purchase low-cost T-shirts with the club name and logo for sale to players. The discs come first.
• For $144, the club has purchased a Ching Scorepointe tournament leaderboard, which will make running tournaments much smoother. Albert Lea Medical Center made this purchase possible. Please thank ALMC.
• The club needs to purchase a cash box.

Doubles League
Time: 5 p.m. Thursdays
Price: $4 ($3 to prize and $1 to club)
Note: It was agreed that it is nice to have doubles more informal and singles more structured. The two provide a nice change of pace.
Schedule: Starts March 31. Ends Sept. 8.
Locations: Start out at Bancroft Bay Park. Watch the league’s page on DiscGolfScene.com for location changes.
